Technical audit and project rescue

If you’re not sure whether your software is in good shape, or whether you’re getting good value from the people building it, an independent technical audit gives you a straight answer. No jargon, no blame: just what’s working, what’s risky and what to do about it.

What I look at

01

Code quality and maintainability

Is the code structured and tested well enough that someone new could work on it safely, or is every change a risk?

02

Architecture and scalability

Will it cope when you have ten times the users? Where are the bottlenecks and single points of failure?

03

Security and data protection

Outdated dependencies, weak access controls, exposed secrets, missing backups. The basics that cause the worst problems.

04

Hosting, performance and cost

Are you overpaying for infrastructure or under-protecting it? Is the product as fast as your customers expect?

05

Delivery process

Testing, deployments, documentation and how work gets planned. Often where the real reason for slow delivery hides.

06

People and supplier risk

Key-person dependency, contracts, ownership of code and third-party licences: the non-code risks investors ask about.

Worth knowing

What you actually receive

A plain-English report with red/amber/green ratings, a prioritised action plan with rough effort for each item and a walkthrough call to answer your questions. If you want help fixing things, I can do that too, but there’s no obligation.

How it works

  1. Intro call and access

We agree what you most want to know. I sign an NDA if you like and ask for read-only access to your code, hosting and tools.

  2. Review

I go through the code, infrastructure, process and documentation, and talk to the people who know the system best.

  3. Report and walkthrough

You get the written report, then we talk it through together so you leave knowing exactly what to do next.

Ways of working together

Every business is different, so I keep this flexible. I’ll recommend the simplest option that gets you what you need.

Option 01

Technical health check

A fixed-scope review of one product or system, with a report and walkthrough.

Best when: You want to know where you stand.

Option 02

Due-diligence review

A review shaped around an investment or acquisition, for founders preparing to be scrutinised or for investors who want an independent view.

Best when: A funding round or sale is coming up.

Option 03

Rescue plan

A practical plan, and optionally hands-on help, to stabilise a stalled or struggling project and get it shipping again.

Best when: A project has gone off the rails.

FAQ

Technical Audit & Rescue: your questions answered.

What is a technical audit?

A technical audit is an independent review of your software and the way it’s built and run. It covers code quality, security, hosting, performance, delivery process and supplier or people risks, and results in a report that tells you what’s healthy, what’s risky and what to fix first.

Do you need access to our code?

Usually, yes: read-only access to the repository and hosting dashboards is enough. I’m happy to sign an NDA first and I never need the ability to change anything to do an audit.

Will the report be full of jargon?

No. The report is written for decision-makers, with technical detail in an appendix for your developers. Every finding says what it means for the business, how serious it is and roughly what it would take to fix.

How long does an audit take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the system, but most reviews take one to two weeks from access to walkthrough. I’ll confirm timing before we start.

Can you audit our agency’s work without causing friction?

Yes. I approach it as a constructive review rather than a witch hunt, and I’m used to working alongside suppliers. A good agency usually welcomes a second pair of eyes.

Can you fix what you find?

If you’d like me to, yes, but you’re under no obligation. The report is yours to take to any developer or agency you choose.
